On Friday December 9th 2011 something happened at a music club in Nashville, TN that members of the party rock band from the 80’s, The Crowd, thought would never happen… a reunion show!

Two members of the Concert Blast team, Mike Arnold and Tom Thompson, were part of the rock band that began performing cover songs at parties in the early 1980s, decided to write and record a few original songs, had those originals played on the radio and began thrilling crowds at the private parties, rock clubs, colleges, and music festivals. Now in 2011 the guys returned to a rock music club in Nashville, TN, Douglas Corner Café, to perform a reunion show to celebrate their first gig from 30 years ago. Also joining the reunion on stage was Tom’s twin brother and bassist of the band, Jim Thompson, the latest lead guitarist, Gary Conn, and the original lead guitarist, Dwayne Smith.

This was a show celebrating their 30 years together, so that’s what we got. Songs from the various albums throughout their history.

Listen to Mike, Tom, and James as they walk you through the night’s setlist and explain what was happening throughout the night. As usual, there are some live clips to enjoy as well.

There were also surprise appearances by American Idol winner Scotty McCreery and runner up Lauren Alaina. Other surprises were short acoustic sets by Clint Black (who performed all new songs) and a couple of songs from the married duo, Thompson Square.

The main surprise of the night was before Trace Adkins took the stage there was an announcement… “Ladies and Gentlemen, Big and Rich!” They performed a new song called, “Fake ID”. In the middle of the song John Rich announced Gretchen Wilson as she took the stage running out to sing along with the chorus of the song. Big Kenny really hyped up the crowd with his on stage antics… Excellent Job!

Throughout the last few sets of the night, we kept receiving texts from our listeners, friends, and family members warning us about a storm coming through. We decided to leave after Martina’s set so we missed Rascal Flatts. The next night all the fans we ran into asked us where we went because the most of the entire football was dancing from one side to the other. We missed out on a good set. We left early for no reason, it didn’t rain at the stadium.

Although the concerts were a lot of fun, the fans we met and our listeners that were there made the experience much more enjoyable.

It was a Wednesday May 11th, 2011 in Nashville, TN and the Cannery Ballroom had a Sold-Out crowd ready to be a part of the Alter Bridge experience. Alter Bridge brought out the excitement in this crowd as fists were pumping in the air and voices were singing along to nearly every song performed that night. The opener for the night, Like-A-Storm, warmed up this energetic crowd and then gave us an interview. Concert Blast had Mike Arnold, Tom Thompson, James Downing, and special guest host, Ryan Stapleton on hand to provide this audio podcast.

After Like -A-Storm performed their set of originals with a closer of the night, AC/DC’s “TNT”, they went to their merchandise booth to make a few sales, sign some autographs, and take photos as they posed with fans. They then went to their trailer to clean up a little and met with us outside the club for a brief, but fun interview.

We went back inside for a Like-A-Storm concert Review and got ready for the night’s headliner, Alter Bridge. As a long time Alter Bridge fan, Ryan Stapleton was our expert for this show as he knew about every band member and every song.

Alter Bridge performed a fun night of Hard Rock with a couple of ballads tossed in. The guitar wizardry of Mark Tremonti, along with band members, Brian Marshall, Scott Phillips, and singer/guitarist Myles Kennedy created a frenzy for the 1,000 plus enthusiastic, sweaty, rockers in attendance.

Listen to our audio podcast as we take you through several live clips of the evening along with a short interview with Like-A-Storm and our review of both performances. Special Thanks to Like-A-Storm for the invitation of covering this night of rock and thanks to their publicist, Lena Wilson for all the hard work of making this happen.

The concert touring season seems to run from the middle of March through the begining of December. While we wait for the artists to hit the road or the Festivals to crank up the music for the large crowds, I decided this would be a great time to re-post our most popular Music Discussion Podcast – Time Songs from October of 2007.

Brian Hasbrook brought the idea to Tom Thompson and me, so we individually collected songs from our memory bank and our research then came together to record our podcast to discuss the songs we found and to remember stories of the artists of the songs.

Our idea, find songs with the word “TIME” or has to do with time on a clock or time of day. If you think about it, there are several. I know, I know, we will definitely forget the obvious songs. In fact, the songs on the intro are some we forgot.

Every year during the month of February, our country celebrates Black History Month. I have thought about all the black artists that has touched our musical lives and realized black artists have been a major part of creating rock and roll. In this podcast we discussed our opinions of the artists, the concerts we’ve attended, and some facts from our researcher, James Downing. We had a great time recording this show and discussing the artists as we walked through the history of the Mississippi Blues, through the Motown Sound, the dance groups, the disco era, and the various Rock and Roll styles.

In this podcast we discuss the following artists…

Show 188 - Stacie Collins CD Release Party Concert Review

December 03, 2010 09:51 PM PST

It was Thursday, November 18th 2010 when one of the most energetic girls of Country Rock, Stacie Collins, celebrated her new CD release, Sometimes Ya Gotta…, with a fun packed-house party at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville, TN. Mike Arnold and James Downing were on hand to host a podcast while celebrating this event.

In this podcast, Mike and James take you through each song of the evening describing the details of the concert. Stacie Collins began the night wearing a long coat and cowboy hat, but it didn’t take long for her to shred both as the “Queen of the Harmonica” led the enthusiastic crowd into most of her energetic new CD.

Stacie’s night consisted of rock songs with a touch of a southern sound that would classify her in the rock category in some songs, southern rock in others, pure country in a few, an Americana flair in most, and a classic party rocker with a few cover tunes.

Throughout the night Stacie showed everyone her harmonica skills, but the skills of her backup band led by her husband, Al Collins, shined through as well.

At one point in the night Stacie brought out her softer side by playing a couple of acoustic ballads that proved her songwriting skills and vocals are well rounded.

Special guest musician and friend, Mike Webb, joined Stacie for a few numbers by playing electric piano and the accordion. The night’s set ended with Stacie in the first couple of rows on top of the tables singing and playing the harmonica, but when the song ended, the loud excited crowd demanded more and they got it as the band kicked in an encore of AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top!”

Mike and James enjoyed the night and we hope you will enjoy this podcast as you will hear studio clips, live clips, and a short conversation with Stacie Collins.

ENJOY!
